Horsley Village Diary 1835 - 1845
1835 Hannah Whilton died Nov. 28th 1835 aged 4 years and about 11 months the daughter of George and Elizabeth Whilton. [George was the authors brother-in-law] 1836 Old Betty Shipstone died January 3rd 1836 Aged 89 years. Emmulia Taylors first son was born February 3rd 1836. [I.G.I. - Alfred son of Amelia Taylor baptised 25th Feb 1836 at Horsley] John Weston and Mary Parker was married on the 29th of February 1836. Mrs Boden the wife of John Boden died April the 16th 1836 aged 32 years. Fanney Grace came to live with John Shipstone on the 30th of April 1836. Mr. Sitwell Esq. died May the 10th 1836 aged 88 years. Eliza Whilton died May 10th 1836 aged 21 years. Mick Knifton and Nancy Abbott was married June 7 1836 at Horsley church. John Whilton the son of Richard and Sarah Whilton died on Horsley wake eve July 23rd 1836 aged 18 years. Mrs. Baggaley died August 4th 1836 aged 50 years. Thos. Hawleys new house was finished August 8th 1836. John Knifton begun of selling ale on the 12th of September 1836. James Annable and Mary Brown was married at Derby on the 26th day of September 1836. Ann Martin was lighted of a child in Richard Whiltons little house and put it in the little house hole October 1st day 1836 and Rich'd Taylor is the childs father. [Mentioned in Derby Mercury - 21st December 1836] John Shipstone and Fanney Grace was married at Duffield on the 10th October 1836. Sarah Slater took in the Methodist preachers for the first time on the 2nd day of October 1836 it was the same time that Sam'l Parker and Jos'h Creswell disagreed concerning Hannah Woodhouse and Jos'h Creswell. Old Shropshire came to live at Horsley Oct 25th 1836. William Fipps and Mary Taylor was married at Duffield Oct 31st 1836. Grace Whilton died Nov. 17th 1836 aged 51. There was a Teetotal meeting held at Woodhouse Chapel on the 10th day of December 1836 1837 Samuel Ottewell died January 6th 1837 aged 33 years of age Nail Factorie Samuel Ottewells sale was held on the 19th day of January 1837. Ann Starbucks first child was born on the 30th of January 1837. Old Thomas Richardson died February 1st Day 1837 aged 69 years. John Noon begun of sinking a well on Parkers hill the 28th Day of Feb. 1837. Ellen Taylor and Thomas Annable was married at Derby the 12th day of March 1837. Thomas Annable and Ellen went to live at Holbrook on [date not clear] Joseph Fouke died March 21st 1837. William Hill went to live in Rodgers yard on the 10th day of April 1837 William Taylor died April 30th 1837 aged 52 years, sugar. [diabetes?] The Methodist Chappel at Kilbourne was opened for divine worship on the 7th day of May 1837. John Annable and Ann Needham was married at Wirksworth on the 7th day of May 1837. Samuel Needham and Mary Booth was married on the 28th day of May 1837 at Duffield. John Pearson was buried on the 28th day of May 1837. The old mans club followed him. Thomas Annables first child was born on the 17th day of June 1837. John Rileys new sign was put up on the 8th of July, 1837. Robert Welch died on the 24th day of August 1837 aged 8 years and 6 months. He died about 8 o'clock at night. Thomas Whilton was born on Sunday night between 11 and 12 o'clock Sept. 3rd 1837. Eliz'th Lovegrove died September the 4th 1837 aged 22 years Bought a pair of new runner of Thos. Christopher Smith and Millicent Parker was married on the 11th day of December 1837 at Horsley church. 1838 William Walters repaired the offside wheel on the 1st day of January 1838. William Bardill and Eliz'th Welch was married January 9th ---------- John Whilton died on the 15th day of January 1838 aged 24 years. Henery Lovegrove died January the 17th 1838 aged 54 years. Hannah Needham entered into the school club on the 12th day of February 1838 paid 1s 6d entrance. Thos. Copnell and Martha Cookram was married on the 12th of February 1838. Thos. Needham bought a clock of Thos. Hawley on the 20th day of February 1838. Joseph Pawfrey and Eliza Allread was married on the 26th day of March 1838. The Rev'd William Constable preached at Woodhouse on the 9th day of April 1838. He preached from these words, The trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised [remaining text unclear] Sarah Ann Bardell the daughter of William and Eliz'th Bardell was born on the 7th day of May 1838. Queen Victoria was crowned on the 28th day of June 1838. The most dreadful Thunder Storm that ever was known on the 28th day of August 1838. Mr. Frizell preached his farewell sermon at Horsley church Sept. 30th 1838. William Bardill went to live at Jos'h Creswells house on the 5th day of Nov. 1839 Joseph Middletons wife died Nov. 27th 1839 aged 28 years of age and left 4 small children. 1840 Thos. Samuel Needham died June 26th 1840 aged 23 years. Mr. Allen preached at Horsley Church for the first time on the 25th day of Dec. 1841. 1842 Richard Mellor and Sidney Taylor was married Jan. 24th 1842. John Wathalls first child was born on the 25th of Jan. 1842. Thos. Needham was born Feb. 11th 1842 on Friday between 11 and 12 o'clock in the fornoon. Edward Smith and Eliza Middleton was married on the 7th day of March 1842 at Duffield. Lydia Wathall died April 8th 1842 Aged 63 years. Edward Parker flitted from Horsley on the 2nd day of May 1842. Thomas Seal was born May 26th 1842 the son of Thos. and Martha Seal. Joseph Peat died June 1st 1842 Aged 39 years. Mr. John Nicholson died August 1st 1842 Aged 60 years of age. He died at Buxton and was buried at Horsley. Horsley men was swore in Constables on the 24th of August 1842 because of the country being all of a mob. Martin Taylor came to old Edward Parkers house August 24th 1842. Joseph Annable went to live at John Fowks house on the 20th day of September 1842. Bland and John Holmes was Executed at Derby Gaol murder of Miss Godda----- of Standley was executed on the 31st March 1843. The Rev.d Edward F Symmons? preached at Horsley for the first time on good Friday April 14th 1843. Thos. Stables of Coxbench died April 19th 1843 Aged 45 years. Ann Parkers fourth child was born May 5th 1843. It was a boy. The Rev.d Hugh Beech? preached at Woodhouse on the 28th day of May 1843. John Abbot was taken to Derby Asylam on the 30th day of June 1843, they took him from John Knifton, Coxbench. Nance? Parker Sidle? Died July 9th 1843 Aged 38 years Eliz.th Bardill Died July 25th 1843 aged 22 Years of age. Sarah Morley borne September 17th 1843 the daughter of Wm. and Eliz'th Morley. Thos. Wathall the son of John and Eliz'th Wathall was borne Sep. 17th 1843. John Hill was married on the 24th day of Sep. 1843 at Horsley Church. Eliz'th Needham fetched a frame from the shop 30 guage from Martins of Belper Sept. 27th 1843. Joseph Welch died Nov. 9th day 1843 Aged 71 years of age. William Abbott died Nov. 7th 1843 Aged 64 years Mary Walters the daughter of Wm. and Mary Walters was born Sept. 2nd 1843. John Abbott came from the asylam on the 13th of Nov. 1843. Robert Parker and Margret Smith was married on the 10th nof Dec. 1843 at Horsley Church. William Whilton and Sarah Grace was married Dec. 26th 1843 at Horsley Church. 1844 William Else died Jan. 30th 1844 aged 79 years. Mary Whilton the daughter of Richard Whilton had a son born on the 11th day of Feb. 1844. Samuel Middleton was married on the 4th day March 1844 They was married at Derby. Sarah Newton went to live at Mary Hollingsworth of Holbrook on the 10th day of April 1844 Mr John Abbot died April 15th 1844 aged 50 years Dorothy Rodgers died April 21st 1844 aged 80 years. Frederick Annable and John Moore run a race on Whit Wednesday May 29th 1844 and Fred lost for £3 15s 0d Mary Needham the daughter of Thos Spendlove and Hannah Needham was born on the 14th of July 1844 on Sunday night about 4 o'clock Christopher Needham went back to Manchester on the 22nd day of August 1844 (and then for the Indeas). Jos'h Noon was married on the 27th day of May 1845 at Duffield. Joseph Annable's leg was cut of on the 27th day of May 1845 at the infirmary. Thomas Needham bought a new wash kettle at Belper June the 6th day 1845. Jos'h Creswell and Hannah Middleton was married at Derby July 22nd 1845.
